		<description>At the core of Murphy’s practice is her ongoing engagement with photography’s inherent and simultaneous tensions between the real/indexical and the unreal/constructed.”— Stephanie McBride, Irish Arts Review

Made between 2021 and 2024, Mise en Abyme is an evolving series grounded in an embodied practice of return: walking the city, revisiting Parisian carousels, tents, curtains, and stages in states of stillness. Murphy photographs these scenes alone and mostly on foot, seeking images that suggest a slippage between real and fictive space.

The work draws on her background in theatre and a fascination with what lies behind the curtain and its threshold of folds, and the seams.

Titles such as Another Heavenly Day (after Beckett) and the Intervals images (after Lucio Fontano) signal an ongoing dialogue with performance, abstraction, rupture, and repair.

Recurrent motifs, drapery, cuts, slashes, mirrored forms,&#38;nbsp; are framed with precision, yet hold within them a sense of estrangement and doubleness.

Influenced by psychoanalysis, and the uncanny which invites a subtle disorientation. It is as much about the grammar of photography -light and shadow, the crop, the exposure - as it is about the psychic atmosphere of the spaces depicted.

Ultimately, it is the viewer’s gaze that completes the image&#38;nbsp; stitching together the seen and the sensed, the absent and the implied.

		<description>
	but here alone (2022 – 2023), uses as a starting point Freud’s definition of the Uncanny — ‘that class of terrifying which leads back to something long known to us, once very familiar’. In this nascent series of works Murphy is drawn to the Parisian Carousel as both image and locus. They simultaneously suggest or provoke a strange familiarity of a delightful childlike pastime and a deep sense of unease. Touching on elements of Magic Realism, images of shuttered carousels provoke a tension between the real and the imaginary, as something normal gathers a sense of abnormality the longer they are looked at.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Now You See Me (2020) asks whether we can believe what we see and forces us to investigate the veracity of our assumptions. The work alludes to the perennial question of photography’s truth-telling and the capacity of the medium to blur boundaries between fact and fiction.

A work may be posited as documentary photography, but does that make it real? Within this series the artifice of the staged is overt: costumes, gestures and poses strike the viewer as unreal and lead the viewer to question the narrative. Taken individually or carefully edited, the works can be read as ethereal or ambiguous, but interspersed with those works that highlight their artifice we begin to read them differently and to question if what we once saw was ever there at all.

The power of the photographer or “author” is exposed as the subtle manipulations designed to make us “read” a photograph in a certain way are made apparent. As John Berger said: “A photograph is not necessarily a lie, but it isn’t telling the truth either.”

Now You See Me questions the very notion of a singular truth and offers a space in between where multiple narratives may exist simultaneously.
